Review of Membership Procedures Following the August Meeting General Assembly

The International Federation of Medical Students’ Associations (IFMSA) is currently conducting a review of the procedures related to the Suspension of Membership, as applied during the recent August Meeting General Assembly held in Tampere, Finland. This comprehensive review was initiated in response to formal requests from National Member Organizations (NMOs) who have expressed their concerns regarding the procedure.

The purpose of this internal and legal examination is to strengthen and refine the procedural framework that guides discussions and decision-making within the Federation. By ensuring greater clarity, transparency, and adherence to IFMSA’s foundational values, we aim to uphold the standards that maintain the trust and collaboration among our members and partners. This review will serve as a vital step in reinforcing our commitment to procedural integrity and organizational resilience.

We extend our sincere gratitude to the partners and individuals who have engaged with IFMSA leadership by offering constructive feedback and support throughout this process. This engagement highlights the shared dedication of our members and stakeholders to a robust, ethical, and accountable governance system. However, we must express concern regarding certain communications received that carried a tone of hostility and undue pressure, appearing to challenge the Federation’s autonomy and independent decision-making processes. The IFMSA reaffirms its unwavering commitment to maintaining fair, independent, representative, and transparent governance in alignment with our mission and principles.

The General Assembly, as the highest decision-making body of IFMSA, stands as a unique platform composed exclusively of our National Member Organizations (NMOs). While the IFMSA Executive Board respects the decision made by the General Assembly at that time, we acknowledge that the situation’s urgency has highlighted the need for clearer procedural guidelines and safeguards for future instances. This will ensure that the balance between timely responses and procedural thoroughness is upheld without compromising the integrity of the Federation or our members.

The IFMSA Executive Board remains dedicated to maintaining an open and ongoing dialogue with our NMOs and partners as we conduct this critical review. We appreciate your continued understanding, trust, and support as we work to uphold the foundational spirit and values of the Federation.

With collective commitment and cooperation, we aim to navigate these challenges while strengthening the bonds that unite our global community.
