Our Alumni

Since 1951, IFMSA has brought together medical students from around the world, creating opportunities to learn, lead, advocate and make a difference in their communities and beyond. Our Alumni remain an important part of this community, bringing their experience, knowledge and connections back to the Federation and supporting the generations that follow.

An IFMSA Alumnus is an individual who was active in the past in the work of the Federation, positively influenced it and contributed to its development, sustainability and visibility.

Being an IFMSA Alumni does not mean that your involvement with the Federation has to end. Alumni continue to support the younger generation through mentorship, advice, capacity building, networking, sharing opportunities and assistance when needed.

In 2010, the Professor Erik Holst Fund, originally established as the Alumni Jubilee Fund and renamed in 2013, was created to further support IFMSA members. Named after the first elected President of IFMSA, the Fund provides Travel Assistance to delegates attending General Assemblies, in the spirit that participation in the enriching world of IFMSA should not be limited by financial barriers. The Fund also provides Micro Grants to Local Chapters of National Member Organizations, supporting innovative and sustainable activities with a meaningful impact in their communities.

Who can become an IFMSA Alumnus?

There are several ways to become an IFMSA Alumnus:

  • Former IFMSA Officials: Officials whose end-term report has been adopted by the General Assembly are considered IFMSA Alumni.
  • Honorary Life Members: IFMSA Honorary Life Members are considered IFMSA Alumni.
  • Other members: Individuals who have made a meaningful contribution to the Federation can be recommended for Alumni status.

Since 2016, Alumni status is not automatic for former members or Officials and requires approval according to the applicable IFMSA procedures. For individuals applying through recommendation, the Bylaws require a recommendation from the NMO President and at least one IFMSA Official. The recommendation is then reviewed and approved by the IFMSA Executive Board before the individual is considered an IFMSA Alumnus.

How can I become an IFMSA Alumnus?

If you believe you meet the criteria and would like to be considered for IFMSA Alumni status, you can submit an application through the Alumni Application Form.

As part of the process, you will need a recommendation from your NMO President and at least one current IFMSA Official. The Executive Board will review the application and make the final decision on approval.
