ULTRASONOGRAPHY: A VITAL MEDICAL TOOL

Name of the activity: ULTRASONOGRAPHY: A VITAL MEDICAL TOOL

Country/NMO: Ecuador (AEMPPI-Ecuador)

Program: Teaching Medical Skills

Contact information: [email protected]

Type of the activity: Capacity Building (Training or Workshop). Teaching and develop knowledge, skills and techniques in a particular field. While training can have any form, workshops are more formal and also include exchange of information between participants.

General description:

Ultrasonography: A Vital Medical Tool was born from our need as future general practitioners to have basic knowledge of ultrasonography. Abdominal ultrasound is a tool for differential diagnosis of most abdominal pathologies that will present during our period as a physician. The knowledge will be imparted during a magisterial exposition that will consist of 3 radiologists and a resident doctor; and a practical workshop that will have the same doctors leading the realization of an abdominal echo for each participant of the project. The workshop will be evaluated with a test in Google forms with a minimum approval grade of 7/10.

Focus area:

Diagnostic tests interpretation

Problem statement:

Ultrasonography is a safe and effective diagnostic imaging method that has been used by physicians for more than half a century to guide the diagnosis of multiple diseases and procedures safely. There have elapsed only a couple of decades from the old times when only the radiologist was the one who performs ultrasounds, until now in which multiple specialist doctors make use of this diagnostic method. Ultrasound is part of the differential diagnosis method of almost all abdominal pathologies.

Target groups:

Medical students, Doctors

Beneficiaries:

General population, Medical students, Doctors

Objectives and indicators of success:

Train 70 medical students from the fourth year onwards on basic knowledge

of performing and interpreting abdominal ultrasonography through a

symposium given by professionals in the subject with a duration of 4 hours in

the month of February 2019.

Each student attending the workshop must perform an eco-abdominal to

another student assistant on the project.

Provide the basic knowledge for performing paracentesis with

ultrasonographic guidance to students attending the project.

Train the participants of the workshop in the handling of Ultrasonography

equipment.

Methodology:

Before the project: Contact with company "My Medical Team Ecuador" and radiologists (6 weeks before). Completion of annexes 9 and 12, and work plan (5 weeks before), Request of laboratories and auditorium to University (4 weeks before), Obtain necessary materials (2 weeks before), Transport and location of ultrasonography equipment to laboratories of the University (1 day before)and Auditory image and sound test (1 day before)

During the project: Theoretical phase: 1. Welcome Words, 2. Presentation of the Workshop, Physical Principles of Ultrasound, Abdomen ultrasonographic Semiology, Basic management and equipment parts, Ultrasound FAST and EFAST, Paracentesis with ultrasound guidance and Coffee break

Practical phase: Division of 4 practice groups for individual performance of an abdominal echo for each participant to another participant.

After the project: Feedback and approval test of the project, Preparation of report and Certificate delivery (3 weeks later).

Plans for evaluation:

An online evaluation will be send to the participants to realize after the project

to evaluate the knowledge that they have acquired through the theoretical and practical phase. The minimum grade of 7/10 to receive the certificate.
