Training on Heteronormativity – Lithuania (LiMSA)
Name of the activity: Training on Heteronormativity
Country/NMO: Lithuania (LiMSA)
Program: Sexuality & Gender Identity
Type of the activity: Capacity Building
General description:
A national training was organised for the medical students of Lithuania (the call for training was distributed in LiMSA official and Facebook pages). The training agenda included explanation of what is LGBT, general discussion, sexual history taking theory, interactive role play situations. Also, open discussion space was ensured after the event in which participants were able to discuss between themselves as well as trainers. The sexual history taking situations were provided to LiMSA and added to the database.
Focus area:
LGBT health and sexual history taking
Problem statement:
Currently LGBT health is not addressed at all in the Lithuanian Medical Studies curriculum and medical students lack even basic understanding on what is LGBT and why this information is relevant to them. Also, the curriculum does not include sexual history taking and it is ignored in most subjects. Therefore, we aim to provide medical students with some evidence-based knowledge in order to help them in their further professional life.
Target groups and beneficiaries:
Medical Students – they will have better understanding on the LGBT health care issues and sexual history taking;
Society – LGBT patients will receive better health care in the future.
Objectives and indicators of success:
To organize a training with professional trainers (attendance goal – at least 20 students;
To create a database on sexual history taking situations in order to use the information in future NPETs and similar training sessions;
To collect feedback from the participants.
Methodology:
Our partners – LGL – National LGBT Rights Organization – have contacted us with the possibility to provide trainings for LiMSA Lithuania members with the possibility to have a training for LiMSA members prepared by Seta – LGBTI Rights in Finland trainers. We collaborated by emails and organised the event complete with training that consisted of theory and interactive situation, also, open discussion space was ensured after the event in which participants were able to discuss between themselves as well as trainers. The sexual history taking situations were provided to LiMSA and added to the database.
Plans for evaluation:
We have evaluated the activity after talking individually with every participant of the training and collected the feedback. We asked about each part of the training and inquired on the need of similar trainings in the future.
