Problem statement:
Antimicrobial resistance is one of the biggest challenges healthcare professionals must face daily but is even more important for us as future health providers since is going to represent the main cause of death by 2050 (10 million people, the equivalent of 1 person every 3 seconds).
Also, one of the main causes is the excess of antibiotics prescriptions, so something must be done and how better than educate the next generation of medical students on this topic.

Objectives:
– The majority of the PAX get the basic knowledge of AMR by the end of the congress
– The majority of the PAX know the main production mechanisms of AMR by the end of the congress
– The majority of the PAX know the healthcare providers’ strategies to face AMR by the end of the congress
– The huge majority of the PAX see AMR as one of the biggest public health threats by the end of the congress
– The huge majority of the PAX see students as one of the groups that can solve this problem by the end of the congress
– The majority of the PAX know projects and/or programs related to tackling AMR by the end of the congress
Indicators of Success:
– At least 50% of the participants state that they have the basic knowledge of AMR by the end of the congress
– At least 50% of the participants state that they are familiar with the main production mechanisms of AMR by the end of the congress
– At least 50% of the participants state that they are familiar with healthcare providers’ strategies to face this issue by the end of the congress
– At least 75% of the participants consider that AMR is one of the biggest on public health threats by the end of the congress
– At least 75% of the participants state that we as students can do more to solve this problem by the end of the congress
– At least 50% of the participants refer to know a project/program that fights AMR by the end of the congress.
All of this indicators are evaluated on a post-congress evaluation form.
Methodology:
1st day consisted of 2 sessions:
– 1st session: One Health and its relationship with multidisciplinary work (PROA groups).
– 2nd session: Basic concepts of AMR, the mechanisms that give rise to them, the SAFE project, and how to get involved as students in this struggle.
2nd day consisted of 4 sessions.
– 1st session: Main resistances observed in the hospital field, and current and future diagnostic tools.
– 2nd session: Virtual Escape Room.
– 3rd session: Health communication, its relationship with AMR, and our role as students in this task. Finally,
4th session: Family medicine, main community’ AMRs, and the evidence in the different public health strategies to avoid multi-resistance.
3rd and last day consisted of 2 sessions
– 1st session: The role of synthetic biology in the present and future of the fight vs. AMR and the iGEM Barcelona’ project on AI for detecting them.
– 2nd session: Take-home messages, wrap-up, and feedback.
Plans for evaluation:
We shared with all the participants a pre evaluation form and after the congress a post evaluation one to see if there were an improvement and our goals were accomplished
External collaborations:
Yes, the Spanish Federation of Pharmacy Students (FEEF) and the research group iGEM Barcelona. They participated as full organizers and truth be told, working with them was amazing.
