Name of the activity: STENOSIS (Strengthen Your ECG Knowledges and Skills)

Country/NMO: Indonesia (CIMSA-ISMKI)

Program: Teaching Medical Skills

Contact information: [email protected]

Type of the activity: Capacity Building (Training or Workshop). Teaching and develop knowledge, skills and techniques in a particular field. While training can have any form, workshops are more formal and also include exchange of information between participants.

General description:

On the first day of this activity, December 8th 2017, there was a lecture by Dr. Habibie Arifianto, Sp.JP, M.Kes. The material provided includes how to read the result of ECG and some ECG interpretations of heart abnormalities. On the second day, December 9th 2017, there was a Focus Group Discussion (FGD) session. The mentor of this FGD was from LKMI Surakarta. The FGD was carried out for 90 minutes to practice the installation of ECG, and 90 minutes for ECG interpretation. There was also a pretest and posttest to evaluate the medical students’ knowledge, and there was a practical checklist to assess the medical students’ skill.

Focus area:

Clinical Examination

Problem statement:

Electrocardiograph (ECG) is an instrument used to record the heart’s electrical activity which can help the doctor to make a diagnosis, especially on heart disease.

Based on Sebelas Maret University skills lab data, many third-semester medical students every year must have an OSCE remedial on ECG topic. Based on the primary assessment results, almost all students claimed they still did not understand about ECG, and there were still many students who make mistakes in answering the questions given

Target groups:

Medical students

Beneficiaries:

Medical students

Objectives and indicators of success:

Goals:

Increase understanding of electrocardiograph in 3rd-semester medical students through lectures and FGDs in 2 days.

Objectives:

• Provide medical students to be able to practice the installation and interpretation of ECG.

• Help the medical students to get maximum results on ECG topic of OSCE.

Success indicators:

• Increase participants’ knowledge about ECG interpretations at least 20%, measured from the written pretest and post-test data.

• Increase participants’ skills to practice the installation of ECG with a minimum score of the practical checklist is 60.

Methodology:

To increase medical students’ knowledge, we held a lecture about electrocardiograph (ECG) interpretation by a cardiologist. To increase medical students’ skills, we held a Focus Group Discussion (FGD) with 5 up to 7 participants for each group. There was one mentor for each group to teach the medical students how to install and interpret the ECG. After that, every participant was given the opportunity to practice the installation of ECG.

Plans for evaluation:

This activity evaluated by the data obtained through a questionnaire that will be processed into qualitative and quantitative data. We collected the data at the beginning of this activity and after the intervention was given. We conducted the survey in the inhabitants of a medical student at Sebelas Maret University. We also conducted pretest, written posttest, and practical checklist to evaluate participants’ knowledge and skills. Every data that we got would be compared, pre and post-event to know the impactfulness and the effectiveness of the interventions of this activity.
