In Cameroon, the future medical doctor in the final year is expected write up a research protocol and implement the thesis project. Conscious of the difficulties many students have in carrying out a research, we brought forth this activity in order to bring that free helping hand to guide, teach and provide the MD candidates with the necessary resources and skills to demystify research, make this process practicable, productive and effective.
Problem statement:
Research at the 7th year is challenging for a majority of the final year medical students as this is their first academic exposure, as a result, they find themselves paying for some steps to done or falsifying data to fit the desired discussions and this results into poor knowledge on research, wrong results and articles when they are published.
Target groups:
Medical students
Beneficiaries:
General population, Medical students, Healthcare Students, Doctors
Objectives:
At least 10 final year medical students nationwide learn how to formulate a good research topic before the end of the 1st phase in December 2022.
At least 10 final year medical students nationwide learn how to ask the relevant research questions before the end of the 1st phase in December 2022
At least 10 final year medical students nationwide learn how to elaborate a research protocol before the start of the second phase of lectures in march 2023
At least 10 final year medical students nationwide learn how analyze their data using SPSS before the end of the second phase of lectures in May 2023
At least 10 final year medical students nationwide are able to discuss the results of their research before the end of the second phase of lectures in May 2023
At least 10 final year students nationwide are able to write a good abstract by the end of the second phase of lectures in May 2023
Indicators of Success:
– at least 80% of these target sample of final year medical students report an increase in their knowledge and skills on formulating a good research topic
– at least 80% of these target sample of final year medical students report they have a better mastery on how to formulate good research questions after the session.
-at least 80% of these target sample of final year medical students report a better understanding of how to elaborate a research protocol by the end of the sessions.
– at least 80% of these target sample of final year medical students report an increase in their skills and understanding of data analysis using SPSS by the end of the sessions
– at least 80% of these target sample of final year medical students report they had an increase in knowledge of how to discuss the results of their research
-at least 80% of these target sample of final year medical students report an increase in their knowledge on how to write a research abstract by the end of the whole activity.
Methodology:
Seek partnership with an expert in epidemiology (Building medical research in Africa, BMR) in October 2022
Create pre and post assessment forms in October 2022
Draft a description plan which contains the topics to be covered during the continuous weekly sessions in October 2022
Set an online call to register (target, 7th years) in October 2022
Advertisement of the activity on social media platforms
general timeline
PHASE 1 : from november 2022 to december 2022
during this period, participants shall have monthly hybrid lectures on how to draft a research protocol delivered by the expert in epidemiology and statistics. this will include classes on introduction (background, rationale , research main objectives and specific objectives, research questions…), relevant literature review (referencing and how to search recent articles), materials and methods and results.
PHASE 2: from march 2023 to May may 2023
this will comprise of weekly physical trainings how to analyse data.
Plans for evaluation:
pre and post evaluation forms – this is a form with both quantitative and qualitative questions to evaluate each of the objectives we had at the beginning and at the end of the activity. this will comprise questions like on a scale of 1 to 10, note your understanding of how to formulate a research question, how do you grade the knowledge you have gained from the session on data analysis using SPSS on a scale of 1 to 10, how wo you grade your undersatnding of research protocol on a scale of 1 to 10, what are the key elements to consider when chosing a research topic?.
External collaborations:
yes, building medical research in Africa, BMR which is a group of dynamic and experienced experts in medical research who provide support and accompaniment to researchers via lectures and data analysis. they will act as the key trainers or facilitators in this activity hence, their recourses. we had no financial support but the partnership helped to reduce the fees by 50% for medical students of our NMO.
