RCSR Regional Congress of Sexual and Reproductive Health – Colombia (ASCEMCOL)
Name of the activity: RCSR Regional Congress of Sexual and Reproductive Health
Country/NMO: Colombia (ASCEMCOL)
Program: Maternal Health & Access to Safe Abortion
Contact information: [email protected]
Type of the activity: Education
The RCSR is an event created for medical students, which main idea was born in order to create a safe space to address issues that concern sexual and reproductive health, a subject that is still a taboo in our society. For this reason, we believe that this space is necessary, where different topics will be developed such as: Safe Abortion , HIV and STIs, comprehensive sexuality, sexual and reproductive rights, among others. The idea is that the assistants can take as much advantage of it as possible as they will also have the possibility to attend the different trainings that will be held on the context of the congress. We believe that as future doctors it is necessary to start a change, where sexuality is normalized, and this is a suitable space to achieve it.
Access to Safe Abortion
This subject has been chosen because women in Colombia are dying due to illegal abortion procedures practiced on them. Many people don’t know that abortion here is legal under 3 legal terms.Even the women that knows this , face a lot of barriers, like the fact that a big percentage of doctors, deny to do so under the conscientious right. In 2006, abortion was legally approved, but 13% of pregnant women keep dying due to clandestine abortions and we can’t keep allowing it.
Target groups and beneficiaries:
Future healthcare providers
Universities and health faculties
Medical Students Associations
Women in the fertile age
Societies and general public
Medical students and future healthcare providers
Objectives and indicators of success:
Promote respect and inclusion of topics like gender equality, the right to live free of violence and discrimination, as well as the freedom to decide about our own body.
Give tools to the assistants so later they can be able to take a personal position, as well as advicing their patients, relatives and friends.
Sucess Indicator: Number of participants who can better explain sexual themes such as abortion , after the congress.
In Order to understand and make the information about the topics easier to be understood , we are going to make a congress with an open space where assistans can ask questions to the professionals. So, with this we want to create an space for arguing and learning in a didactic way, which is going to be possible after they have the tools to do so, and those tools are going to be given to them in the congress through talks and trainings.
Plans for evaluation:
In the inscription procedure would ask for an email , and after the congress we are going to send a google forms in which we are going to ask different questions about the level of satisfaction and reception that they had about the event.
