General description:

Despite advances in improving prenatal care, delivery and birth, the result of a series of efforts and initiatives by governments and society in the last 30 years, the reduction of maternal and neonatal morbidity and mortality remains a challenge. To try to mitigate this reality, IFMSA Brazil UNINASSAU organized this activity. The event had theoretical and practical content in the university’s skills laboratory, and was taught by Obstetrician-Gynecologist Dr. Aline Maranhao.

Problem statement:

High maternal mortality rates represent a public health challenge in our country. By not guaranteeing safe access to the maternity event, women are limited in the exercise of their citizenship. Thus, in obstetrics, reception at the entrance of hospitals and maternity hospitals takes on peculiarities of the needs and demands related to the pregnancy process, but there is no adequate practical preparation during the medical course for the ideal care of these cases.

Objectives:

1) To inform academics about assistance and stratification of obstetric urgencies and emergencies;
2) To train the main maneuvers necessary for quality care in the face of an obstetric urgency or emergency.;
3) To increase academics’ confidence in their ability to deal with urgent situations and obstetric emergencies

Indicators of Success:

1)Get at least 40 responses to the workshop impact assessment form.
2) After the activities, at least 70% of the academics scored 4 or 5 in the evaluation regarding their level of knowledge regarding assistance and stratification of obstetric urgencies and emergencies.
3) After the activities, at least 50% of the academics scored 4 or 5 in the assessment of the academics’ confidence in their abilities to deal with emergencies and obstetric emergencies.

Methodology:

The activity will be developed on May 20th, in the city of Recife- PE and coordinated by 5 coordinators of the local committee IFMSA Brazil UNINASSAU. The disclosure will take place through instagram and the activity will include 40 academics from the faculty and will last 4 hours, with half of the time devoted to the theoretical exposition on Assistance and Risk Stratification by Dr. Aline Maranhão and during the other hours, the participants will practice the knowledge and maneuvers acquired on the parts and mannequins of the simulation laboratory of the faculty, based on previously selected clinical cases. A fee of 12.50 reais will be charged to fund the registration platform.

Plans for evaluation:

The impact assessment will be done in person with pre and post activity forms. The pre, contained the following 4 questions. 1) On a scale of 0 to 5, how much do you think your knowledge about obstetric urgency and emergencies is? 2) On a scale of 0 to 5, how capable do you feel to handle cases of urgency and obstetric emergencies? 3) Do you know which manual to use for Reception and Risk Classification in Obstetrics? 4) On a scale of 0 to 5, how relevant do you think the topic addressed is? The post-activity form contained all the pre-activity questions and the question “How much of the knowledge acquired today were you able to implement in the practical part?”

External collaborations:

The students began the elaboration of the project in partnership with the university UNINASSAU. This partnership will enable the use of simulation dummies and dolls, in addition to the room for the workshop.
