General description:

Medical Education Week is a series of medical-education-related activities planned by 4 working groups from 4 different regions in Taiwan aiming to raise public concern on issues beyond formal medical education system. Based on different environment and combination of group members, there may be various possibilities of topics selected and activities designed. By participating Medical Education Week, participants get the opportunity to approach the issues they are interested in, and coordinators and working groups may call for attention on issues they care.

Focus area:

Students’ involvement in medical education | Non-formal/informal education

Problem statement:

Nowadays, , things changes rapidly and it is getting harder and harder for institutions (especially schools) to follow up. For instance, in modern Taiwan, workplace violence in the hospital (especially in the emergency department) has been on the rise. According to a survey of 236 nursing staff in the emergency department of Southern Taiwan, 91.5% has experienced verbal attack or abuse and 29.7% physical violence. However, recent curriculum doesn’t up skill medical students how to be aware and how to cope with such condition. Non formal education may thus help to fill in the gap by letting students to select and carry out a project or workshop to discuss certain topics.

Target groups and beneficiaries:

The main target group of medical education week is all the medical students or whoever is interested in the topic selected, since the main target of the activity is to raise awareness of medical education related issues among medical students or even better, the public.

Objectives and indicators of success:

– To enhance participants’ capability to cope with different situations according to issues introduced :
– To provide participants a better knowing into certain issue after their participation : increase participants’ knowledge toward issues introduced after participating the activity.
– To raise public awareness of medical education related issues : trigger participants to follow issues with interest.
– To raise public awareness of SCOME-FMSTW : increase participants’s willingness to participate in other activities held by SCOME or FMSTW.

Methodology:

Around September, a meeting between Local Officers of SCOME in Taiwan will be held, and 4 coordinator representing the 4 regions will be selected. Later on the coordinators will build up their own working group to work on a topic chosen by them. Later on each working group will have to plan an activity open to public ,for instance workshop or exhibition, as a wrap-up presentation. As long as the topic is medical-education-related, any form of activities planned is welcomed. After all 4 regions held their activities, the 4 coordinators will perform the results on the FMSTW SCOME meeting.

Plans for evaluation:

For each activity arranged, a feed-back system is required. The most common design is to create a questionnaire for satisfaction survey, and participants will be requested to fill out one after their participation. By analyzing the results of the survey, whether the objectives are reached may be observed.
Beside this, comparing the active view of FMSTW posts on facebook and the number of participants sign up for other activities held by SCOME-FMSTW can serve as one of the indicators of whether public awareness on medical education issues is raised.
