Sustainable Development Goals addressed: SDG 3 (Good health and well-being), SDG 16 (Peace, Justice and Strong Institutions)
General description:
In order to unravel patients’ thoughts on what is a good doctor and on what we can do to become one, we asked patients and elderly people in healthcare institutions to write letters to medical students. We hope that, by reading these letters, medical students feel more motivated to join a system where patient centered care prevails. The Letters to Medical Students will be shared through ANEM-Portugal’s social media, in order to approach as many medical students as possible.
Problem statement:
Patient centered care is not always the method used in daily medical practice. In order to understand the reality that is experienced by patients, and to sensitize medical students to the importance of an empathic provision of care, we developed this initiative. We collected the testimonies of several patients and other elder individuals, that are intended to be read by medical students, and that demonstrate what is the input that these people have regarding what is a good health practitioner.
Target groups:
- General population
- Medical students
- Elderly people
Beneficiaries:
- General population
- Medical students
- Doctors
Objectives:
Get together, at least 60 letters addressed to medical students, through the year 2022.
To share, through social media, at least 30 letters addressed to medical students, through the year 2022.
To have, at least 400 medical students reading the letters, through the year 2022.
Indicators of Success:
O1: Get together, at least 40 letters addressed to medical students through the year 2022.
O2: To share, through social media, at least 20 letters addressed to medical students through the year 2022.
O3: To have, at least 200 medical students reading the letters, through the year 2022.
Methodology:
Having already done the letter’s collection process in previous years, in 2022 we intend to pursue and intensify their divulgation, so that a great number of Portuguese medical students can read and get sensitized by their content. First, we will select several letters to be shared each month. Then, we will use our NMO’s social media (Facebook, Instagram, website) to share the letters selected. We also intend to record audio of people reading the letters, so that it can be published on our Spotify. At last, we will analyze the impact that the initiative had on medical students. Bearing this in mind, we believe that we will be able to achieve our objectives.
Plans for evaluation:
Quantitative – Progress and calculation of data from the indicators
We will analyze the reach that the social media posts will have (number of visualizations, sharing, comments, reactions) in order to evaluate the outcomes of the initiative and its range of action.
