Type of the activity: Capacity Building (Training or Workshop). Teaching and develop knowledge, skills and techniques in a particular field. While training can have any form, workshops are more formal and also include exchange of information between participants.

General description:

Through this activity we aim to teach medical students who are going to enter hospitals/clinics for the very first time about disposal of biomedical waste, use of certain clinical instruments eg. the stethoscope; about needle stick injuries and hepatitis B vaccination and about history taking and the importance of Research.

Focus area:

Hand Hygiene, Clinical Instruments and their use, Needle Stick Injuries and Hepatitis B vaccination (Pre-exposure Prophylaxis), Wearing gloves, Disposal of Biomedical Waste

Problem statement:

The medical education curriculum in our country doesn’t focus on teaching the basics of dos and dont’s of entering clinics, practically. So to create awareness and provide guidance to the students who are entering clinics/ hospitals for the first time, we created this activity to teach the basics through a live interactive session. I don’t have the official statistics for supporting situation but this is has been observed by our National Team, that new medical students lack awareness of the same

Objectives –

i. To know the use of certain instruments in Clinics

ii. To know about Needle Prick Injuries and Hepatitis B Vaccination

iii. To know about basic precautious methodologies

iv. To know about segregation of Bio – Medical Waste

Indicators of Success:

i. No. of participants

ii. Accurate responses in questionnaires

iii. Satisfaction of audience (feedback chart)


A live interactive demonstration session was conducted using a powerpoint presentation made by the SCOME National Team as a supporting tool for the 3rd semester students – who enter hospital for the very first time and there are certain practices which they need to adopt well to avoid putting their lives or the patients’ lives at risk.

We created pre and post event questionnaires to evaluate response of the activity
