Type of the activity: Campaign. Combination of education and advocacy. Campaigns create awareness in society about a certain topic (education aspect) and try to funnel this awareness into pressure on the decision makers to adapt policies accordingly (advocacy aspect).

General description:

Educational workshop on Depression. The following points will be points:

• What is depression?

• What are the characteristics of a person with depression?

• Preventive measures of the Depression.

• How to approach a person with Depression.

• What is Suicide?

• Preventive measures of suicide.

• How to approach a person with suicidal thoughts or attempts,

• Myths about Depression and Suicide.

This talk will be given by Medical Students of UDO Bolívar, who previously will have to be educated in the subject, for a deeper knowledge. After the talk, a survey will be conducted to assess whether the participant learned to approach people with depression and thoughts or suicidal behavior.

In the Training for the General Physician and Medical Student in the Approach of Patients with Depression, Anxiety and Suicidal Ideas.

Information will be sent online, videos of specialists with explanation of symptoms of depression and age groups

Focus area:

Integration of mental health within primary healthcare

Problem statement:

Mental health is a major problem socially, economically and culturally, within the general population and particularly within vulnerable groups including medical students. Stigma exists broadly which marginalises and discriminates against those with mental illness. In Venezuela, statistical data on depression and suicide are not available. Therefore there is underreporting, although different mental health institutions report an increase in the incidence of depression and casuistry of suicides.

Objectives and indicators of success:

-Objective 1: Raising awareness regarding mental health within target populations

-Indicator: Brief, opportunistic survey of medical students before, and some time after implementation of the mental health activity.

-Objective 2: Support, create and promote mental health initiatives

-Indicator: Number of quality initiatives implemented by an Society Scientifics

-Objective 3: Collaborate with stakeholders to educate mental health trainers on mental Health

-Indicator: Post-educational assessment of an education program endorsed by at least 1 mental health stakeholder

-Objective 4: Awareness and training on mental health in target populations, in this case about depression among students and other people

-Indicator: Maximum assistance to the instructional talk, and the result of the survey carried out later.

Methodology:

Evaluate population focus, in this case 2 universities, 1 basic education school and 1 hospital. Make contact with the Department of Student Welfare, in the area of ​​Mental Health of the different Faculties and School. Establish problems at the local and national level, in this case demotivation, cases of depression and suicidal ideation.

Make a presentation of the project, print letters explaining how the activity will take place. It contains: What is depression ?, What are the characteristics of a person with depression, How to approach a person with depression, What is suicide? How to approach a person with thoughts or suicidal attempts, Myths about Depression and Suicide.

After the talk, a survey will be conducted to assess whether the participant learned to approach people with depression and thoughts or suicidal behavior.

It will be taught by medical students and a specialist in Psychiatry.

Plans for evaluation:

Conducting a pre-workshop survey to assess knowledge prior to the knowledge imparted and at the end of the didactic workshop will be conducted another survey that will focus on checking the consolidation of knowledge in the target group, in this case university students, doctors, youth, adolescents , other health professional.

In the training for Physicians and Students, virtual tests will be carried out as well as final exam applying the workshop and the surveys to the target population
