General description:

The proposed Global Ideas Laboratory, with a focus on Universal Health Coverage, will be rolled out in two phases. The first phase will involve training of 40 medical students on Universal Health Coverage through a series of talks from seasoned health professionals and interactive sessions. Having evaluated the trainees before the workshop, we will then evaluate their knowledge and attitudes after the workshop to assess the level of success of the training.

The trainees will also be required to run two to three social media campaigns to their target population with the knowledge that they have acquired on Universal Health Coverage. These campaigns will also be evaluated based on the responses that they get and the accuracy of knowledge obtained as seen through a post-campaign survey.

Problem statement:

In several countries worldwide, the healthcare needs of the population remain unmet. Part of this problem arises from the fact that medical students lack sufficient knowledge about how they can deliver better healthcare in their communities. Kenya is in the process of rolling out Universal Health Coverage to four counties affecting 3.2 million Kenyans. Medical students need to play a significant part of this development as future caregivers and leaders in the health sector.

Objectives and indicators of success:

1. To equip 40 medical students with knowledge on Universal Health Coverage by March 2019.

Success Indicators

a. The number of medical students attending the workshop.

b. The number of medical students scoring 80% or higher in the evaluation quiz at the end of the workshop.

2. To empower medical students to advocate for better delivery of healthcare services in Kenya through social media by March 2019.

Success Indicators

a. Number of social media campaigns carried out by medical students by March 2019.

b. The number of social media responses obtained from the advocacy campaigns.


The activity will involve having a workshop over one day to train 40 medical students on Universal Health Coverage. This will involve giving facts on Universal Health Coverage across the world and then zeroing in to Kenya. We will use speakers from the Public Health Department, the Ministry of Health, University of Frankfurt Clinic and the GIZ amongst other stakeholders.

The activity will have interactive sessions where students will share their knowledge on Universal Health Coverage and how UHC can be better contextualized in Kenya.

The students will then be given a task to come up with two to three social media campaigns to run for two to three weeks after their training. They will be tasked with coming up with an idea for the campaign, having a target audience and giving facts to their target population about UHC.

Plans for evaluation:

We will evaluate our activity in the following ways:

1. Assessing the number of medical students who respond to the call for activity and those who come for the workshop.

2. Assessing the knowledge and attitudes of the trainees of the workshop by administering a questionnaire before the training.

3. Assessing the knowledge and attitudes of the trainees by administering a questionnaire after the workshop.

4. Assessing the number of social media campaigns conducted by the trainees.

5. Assessing the number of responses the campaigns receive on social media

6. Assessing the knowledge and attitudes of the target population after the social media campaigns.
