“Education towards a responsible society, transforming universities through RRI” : 2nd HEIRRI Conference Outcomes

Vienna, Austria – The 2nd HEIRRI (Higher Education Institutions & Responsible Research and Innovation) Conference took place on April 27th 2018 under the theme “Education towards a responsible society, transforming universities through RRI“. The meeting hosted over 100 international representatives from different high-level educational institutions, along with academics, industry, international associations, and other stakeholders.

During the meeting, the results of nearly three years of project activities designed to promote the integration of RRI within the education of scientists, engineers and other professionals involved in the Research & Development process were presented. Participants had the opportunity to discuss the HEIRRI training programmes and their piloting, to debate on the future of RRI in Europe and beyond, to discover other initiatives on RRI training, and to engage in multidisciplinary sessions. A combination of keynote talks, parallel thematic sessions, RRI initiatives speed dating, and a poster session were held to make for an engaging and enriching event.

Since HEIRRI’s inception in 2015, IFMSA sits as a member of the Science Communication & Internationalization Advisory Board (SCIAB). During a parallel session on “Challenges of teaching RRI at higher education institutions”, IFMSA presented its work towards RRI within the Standing Committee on Research Exchanges (SCORE), with the abstract titled “International Federation for Medical Students’ Associations (IFMSA) Research Exchange Program: Local Actions with a Global Impact”. Potential future endorsement for the soon to-be released “Open Science” training was discussed, as well as networking with research institutes involved in research ethics and social accountability. Furthermore, the upcoming SCORE Research Camp 2018 (RC18) was presented, receiving very positive feedback.

In the future,  SCORE will be integrating more of the RRI tools into the capacity building conducted within the program of research exchanges. Likewise, the concept of RRI shall be integrated in the already existing IFMSA policy on Open Access, Open Educational Resources and Open Data.
