Chiron
Name of the activity: Chiron
Country/NMO: Greece (HelMSIC)
Program: Ethics & Human Rights in Health
Contact information: [email protected] [email protected]
Type of the activity: Capacity Building (Training or Workshop). Teaching and develop knowledge, skills and techniques in a particular field. While training can have any form, workshops are more formal and also include exchange of information between participants.
General description:
The activity is conducted twice a year, once every semester, in two LCs, Athens and Thessaloniki.
The project consists of a two-week internship in the open polyclinics of Medicins du Monde, where the participants help the doctors and acquire more clinical experience outside an organized hospital. They are also sensitized and they come in contact with people of vulnerable social groups. During their internship, students are given the opportunity to help the doctors examine their patients and to enjoy hands-on experience on how to examine and communicate with patients belonging to vulnerable social groups (it is the majority of the patients that visit the outpatients of Medecins du Monde).
Beforehand, students participate in a two hour meeting intending to prepare them for their internship. The experienced health personnel of the facility inform medical students about their role in the polyclinic and the right approach techniques consistent with human rights.
Focus area:
Human Rights for Medical Professionals in daily clinical settings
Problem statement:
In Greece there are no organized public services for informing the refugee populations about their rights in the health system. Moreover, healthcare professionals are not sufficiently trained on how to approach these patients with respect to their culture, and in a human rights based way. Medical students are not taught about inequalities in health and are highly unaware of the fact that several population groups are excluded from the healthcare system.
Target groups:
Medical students
Beneficiaries:
General population, Medical students, Migrants, Refugees, Homeless people
Objectives and indicators of success:
Objectives
-Inform medical students about the special needs of sensitive social groups, especially when it comes to health care and treatment.
-Familiarize medical students with the principles of human rights based approach, especially when it comes to treating members of sensitive social groups.
-Educate medical students on practicing limited resources medicine.
-For medical students to gain practical experience on approaching and treating members of sensitive social groups.
