Being Women

Name of the activity: Being Women

Country/NMO: Honduras (IFMSA-Honduras)

Program: Gender Based Violence

Contact information: [email protected]

Type of the activity: Capacity Building (Training or Workshop). Teaching and develop knowledge, skills and techniques in a particular field. While training can have any form, workshops are more formal and also include exchange of information between participants.

General description:

“Being Women” is for the women, the women who have forgotten to love themselves. We will reach about 400-600 women, from a wide age range, from two Honduran cities, with the help of dedicated IFMSA volunteers.

A key factor in remediating issues such as violence, teenage pregnancies, and strict gender roles is access to pertinent information on aid organizations, comprehensive sexual education, and the understanding of sexism. Participants will come out with a renewed sense of self-worth mixed with valuable information.

Focus area:

Women Empowerment

Problem statement:

The need for this type of activities comes from the simple fact that women are under-represented, under-estimated and under-valued. We live in a world where one in every 8 women will develop clinical depression in their lifetime, and only 4% of women consider themselves beautiful.

In Honduras, about 27% of women have been victims of violence at some point in their lifes. Also, 1.7% of the victims have suffered violence at home. One in every four Honduran women that give birth are teenagers.

Target groups:

Medical students, Healthcare Students, Other Students

Beneficiaries:

General population, Women

Objectives and indicators of success:

Objective 1: Spread necessary information about aid for women suffering violence at home, comprehensive sexual education, and the impact of sexism.

Indicators:

-All participants report greater knowledge on where to go and/or report if they are ever emotionally, physically or sexually abused.

-At least 80% of the participants qualify the facts about comprehensive sexual education as helpful.

-At least 70% of participants report a greater awareness of the sexism around them.

Objective 2: Foment a message of self-love, confidence, and female empowerment.

Indicators:

-At least 40 medical students receive this workshop first-hand in Tegucigalpa and San Pedro Sula combined.

-This workshop is replicated and received by more than 300 women before July 18th.

-At minimum, 80% of the participants report increased levels of self-love, confidence, and empowerment.

Methodology:

Two IFMSA TNT-trainers will facilitate a 2-day workshop that consists of 14 working hours, to 20-25 participants, in our capital city Tegucigalpa. The focus of the topics for the sessions is empowerment and learning how to improve their lives by loving themselves, accepting thir bodies, and identifying sexism. Then these 20-25 will team up in groups of two or three. In order to receive a nationally recognized certificate each team must replicate the workshop with 20-25 participants. Then the same will be replicated in another Honduran city, San Pedro Sula. In total, we will reach around 400-600 women with this workshop.

Who will these women be? They will be students from our universities, high school students, women from other organizations, and women in risk situations (such as the Directorate for Children, Youth, and Family, women in poor communities, among others).

Plans for evaluation:

Before and after every workshop, the participants must fill an anonymous survey that will serve as comparison to determine if our objectives were reached.

In addition, each IFMSA member will keep in touch with the participants they gave out the workshop.
