Problem statement:

With 700,000 people losing battle to antimicrobial resistance (AMR) per year and another 10 million projected to die from it by 2050, AMR alone is killing more people than cancer and road traffic accidents combined together. India has one of the highest rates of resistance to antimicrobial agents used both in humans and food animals. Hence it is very important to understand the contribution by humans, animals, food and environment to tackle AMR

Objectives:

Objectives 1-5 target at least 800 members of the general population by using a powerpoint presentation in a 45-60 minute online/on-ground awareness campaign in a span of 2 months.

-To sensitise about the incidence, prevalence and distribution of AMR 

– To increase awareness about spread of AMR, associated high risk hosts and agents and favourable environmental factors

– To increase awareness about the importance of rational use of AntiMicrobial Agents in human health

– To bust myths & misconceptions about AMR & highlight the dangers of AMR during the current COVID-19 pandemic 

– To achieve the above objectives with the help of at least 100 medical students through training sessions on AMR  in a span of 5 weeks.

-To strengthen awareness about AMR amongst medical students and the general population through competitions for medical students and a social media campaign with an outreach of at least 500 social media users in a span of 4 weeks.

Indicators of Success:

General Indicators

– Number of Medical Students trained = 100

– Number of online events for general population= 20 

– General population reached= 800

– Minimum participation in the poster-essay competition= 20

– Minimum participation in the logo making competition= 20

– Outreach through Social Media Campaign= 500

Specific Indicators (For the online/on-ground awareness campaign for general population)

– At least 60% of the general population know the incidence, prevalence and distribution of AMR

– At least 60% of the general population know how AMR spreads along with associated high risk hosts and agents and various favourable environmental factors/ conditions

– At least 60% of the general population understand the importance of rational use of AntiMicrobial Agents in human health

– At least 60% of the general population have their myths and misconceptions about AMR cleared.

– At least 60% of the general population understand the dangers of AMR during the current COVID-19 pandemic.

Methodology:

AMR Training for healthcare students:

An online training to be conducted for at least 100 medical students in order to orient   them towards Antimicrobial Resistance and the need of addressing it to the healthcare sector and the general public. 

-AMR Activity for General Public:

An online/on-ground activity to be conducted for the general population between the age group of 14-35 years of age. These sessions will be conducted online/on-ground (depending on the situation) by the medical students who have been trained to deliver these sessions. 

-Poster-Essay Competition: 

A poster making and essay writing competition to be conducted in the first week of    November where medical students can send their entries before the onset of the World Antibiotic Awareness Week WAAW  

-Social Media Campaign:

During the WAAW, creative infographics to be used on various thematics of Antimicrobial Resistance  in order to create online awareness amongst the healthcare students.

Plans for evaluation:

The AMR training for healthcare students and the AMR Activity launched for the general population, as well as the AMR group discussion activity for medical students will be evaluated through pre and post event questionnaires. 

The social media campaign will be evaluated by the number of social media users reached and the competitions will be evaluated through the number of entries received.
