Name of the activity: Vampire Cup

Country/NMO: Austria (AMSA)

Program: Organ, Marrow & Tissue Donation

Contact information: [email protected]

Type of the activity: Campaign

Focus area:

Blood donation, Marrow donation

Problem statement:

In Austria we need around 470.000 blood bottles a year and there is till today no comparable alternative to blood. Although blood saves lives young people, mainly between 20-30 do not tend to donate blood and we want to change that!

Target groups and beneficiaries:

Target group: young people, mainly students in the cities Vienna, Graz and Innsbruck
Benefit: Whole society

Objectives and indicators of success:

o Raise awareness about blood and marrow donation among students with Facebook posts, events and posters. Also show them how many liters of blood a university collected to make it more visible how easy blood donation is. Indicator: Likes and acceptance of Facebook events.
o Make students donate more blood by advertising blood donation as a “competition” in cooperation with the Austrian Red Cross with several possibilities to donate blood. Indicator: Statistics about collected blood.

Methodology:

o Contact the Austrian Red Cross and the universities to get the approval to make the events.
o Talk to the Red Cross for the organizational matters, such as human resources at the event.
o Collaborate with other organizations, such as AFÖP (Austrian pharmacists).
o Create, together with the Red Cross, the design for flyers, posters and Facebook-banners.
o Create Facebook Events (in whole Austria around 20) and an online campaign for each city.
o Establish workforce for every event going on.

Plans for evaluation:

We will be evaluating the activity by letting the students fill out a questionnaire from wich university they are. Hence, we can on the one hand use the data for the competition and on the other hand we can also use it to compare how many people donated blood from one to the next year.
