General description:

Our curriculum lacks of most of the basic skills and we’ve seen some of the repercussions when faced with difficulties once in the working world, and ones of these lacks are Basic surgery skills and EKG interpretation which are the most important and basic topics that every students must master especially in time of crisis . So we decided to tackle the problem though different workshops, presented by specialist and for a limited number of participants at the time to be more impactful .Our target were undergraduate students and our mains beneficiaries are the patients of course.
For each workshop goals and objectives were set up accordingly: Basic surgical techniques and differentiation between physiological and pathological EKGs. We made sure to attain those objectives by doing an assessment during the workshops and making sure that each participant understood each point and the end we gave them leaflet with take home reminder and did a feedback session to measure up the impact. Long term evaluation isn’t set up yet but we will definitely work on it once we have a good number of reached people

Problem statement:

In our medical education system not all the students can do their specialty, only 50% of a promotion at most, so we end up with a lot of general practitioners. This generalists sometimes choose to go work in rural areas where most of the time they are the only doctors around and they will be relayed on for most the cares. The problem occurs here, in our curriculum we don’t have courses on Basic surgery skills nor do we have enough courses on Diagnostics tests interpretations, so when sent alone in an area without resources without knowledge, those doctors cannot provide proper care for their patients, not only that but as medical students these are the basic that everyone should master . Sadly we found out that this was not the case as there were only 5% of the participants that knew how to suture before the workshops, and only 2% knew the names of each material they worked with. In the Diagnostics test interpretation we did and EKG workshop and even though the participants had their cardiology module only 50% knew really how to differentiate a normal EKG from a pathological one and few 20% knew some of the pathologies discussed. So the problem arise as we medical student’s don’t know our ABCs and it’s an obligation to know those before graduation.ou

Target groups and beneficiaries:

The targets for “Souk’s Workshops” are all the undergraduate medical students who don’t master Basic Surgery Skills and who don’t have enough knowledge about the interpretation of an EKG. For starters we are doing workshops for 28 participants at a time and prioritizing the ones that will graduate soon which are considered to be about 50% of the participants, the rest are from different years of study . In the EKG workshop in addition to giving priority to the soon-to-be-graduate we choose participants who have some notions before about the topic.
The beneficiaries from these workshops are the patients, or the future patients that we as student’s we will face in our daily work.

Objectives and indicators of success:

In order to do surgery work on even simple sutures, every student must learn basic surgical techniques such as:
– Surgical scrubbing, growing and gloving: which the most important step of every medical act, if not done correctly the risk of sepsis is high
-Differentiation between the different materials used to do the suture properly and easily.
-Basic suturing techniques and treatment for different wounds: from simple knots to more complex ones and when to use which.
As for the EKG part, the objectives are:
-Knowing the steps to perform an EKG in order to avoid errors that might make the interpretation difficult
-Being able to identify a normal EKG and its physiological variances to sort up between real emergency and normal simple cases.
-Being able to identify the most known pathological EKGs to facilitate the sorting and being able to focus more and the more complex cases.

Methodology:

For both of the workshops we were dependent on the residents who presented them, see as we had to make on coincide with their free time, but it was possible as we were able to do 2 editions of each workshop.
Once the residents confirmed with us, for the Suture workshop we were conditioned by the lack of resources and the high price of the different materials so we made it a paying workshop and in exchange the participants were able to take home the model they sutured.
Once the material bought and the residents confirmed we launched a forms for the participants and we had some criteria as mentioned above (soon to be graduated are prioritized for both workshops, and those who have some basic notion in cardiology for the EKG workshop). During the workshops and through different forms of instant evalutions we were able to attain our objectives.
At the end we had prepared some leaflet with a take home message, containing the most important points of the workshops as a reminder for later.

Plans for evaluation:

Asking questions all along the workshops; at the beginning of every step to know if the point that will be tackled is known/understood by some of the participants (and we count those who don’t know or partial know to measure up the impact) and before the end we do a little quiz to know if everyone understood the different points. As the activity is just starting we can’t really measure up the long term impact as it should be in the field of work but we’ve had some feedbacks from participants who were able to follow better during their trainings .
Aside from the impact we’ve had on the student’s by teaching them medicals skills that they don’t have in their curriculum and helping in the development of their professional life, through this workshop we developed a good working partnerships with the residents that present the workshops and they were able to help up shape up the workshops more and bring focus to certain areas over others. In addition they are our future teacher and the fact that they see our struggle will push them in the long run to helps advocate for better curriculum
