Name of the activity: Medical Education System Survey

Country/NMO: IFMSA

Program: Medical Education Systems

Contact information: [email protected]

Type of the activity: Reseach

General description:

How Medical Education Systems are formulated globally and understand the variations between schools, countries & continents. Our desired outcome was to collect comprehensive information, that includes details of diverse medical curricula in an attempt to detect similarities and differences, repetitive narratives and find new areas of work for SCOME internationally.

Focus area:

Students’ involvement in medical education | Curriculum design/development

Problem statement:

SCOME had a lack of data about the medical education systems from around the world. Information that is really useful for the development of the international work of the Committee, as well as a worldwide understanding of different areas of the medical education such as the pre-clinical training, clinical training and accreditation process from medical schools.

Target groups and beneficiaries:

Primary target: medical schools worldwide
Secondary target: SCOMEdians
Beneficiaries: Medical school, medical students and healthcare systems.

Objectives and indicators of success:

Objectives:
To collect information on how the various Medical Education Systems are set up across the IFMSA network and not to assess the quality of the educational institutions.
To provide data for SCOMEdians and medical students worldwide about medical education systems as a support evidence to their Activities
To provide data for relevant externals in order to collaborate on future Medical Education projects.
Indicator of success:
Number of responses to the survey
Number of Regions Represented
Number of NMOs

Methodology:

A survey was designed that covered the different aspects of the Medical Education Systems worldwide. It included general information, pre-clinical training, clinical training, internship and accreditation of the different Medical Schools.

Plans for evaluation:

We are creating a document including a general report of all the results we gathered plus some deeper insight on specific regional priorities, including the number of responses to the survey, number of regions represented and number of NMOs that participated. The SCOME International Team will also analyze the results and use them as an internal tool to promote Medical Education activities and support members in the advocacy processes they are going through.
Detailed results of the survey will not be made public, as we don’t have an agreement from all the Medical Schools involved, but will be used for internal purposes and reporting only.
