Problem statement:

Recently, many of us would think the most serious challenges we face
worldwide in our medical field, could be Malignant Tumors, HIV, Organs
transplantation, Congenital anomalies, etc… But, on the other hand, we are
facing a threatening challenge which is able to demolish hundred years of
medical prosperity in a blink of an eye returning us back to epidemics that can
end millions of lives. What makes matters worse, that this magical pill or
injection you have invented is no more effective against that causative microbe
whether it is a bacterium, virus, or even fungus. It is Anti-Microbial Resistance,
the Global Health Issue made by our hands. “Humans have overused antibiotics
simply by harnessing them to treat all sorts of infections from pneumonia to
strep throat, but also by sometimes taking too much of them, or infusing them
into agricultural systems, animals, and food products. This abuse has opened
the door for bacteria to evolve into resistant strains to beat out drugs. We’re
now in a place where changes desperately need to be made in order to prevent
millions of deaths from antibiotic resistance in the coming decades. These microscopic microbes seem to be smarter than us.”
Thus, in sake of taming these microbes and defeating their malicious
resistance, beside controlling the misuse and overuse of Antibiotics and looking
for the newly invented alternatives, we must keep each antimicrobial away
from getting resisted, avoiding its transform to be just a new nutrition for the
target microbe!

Target groups and beneficiaries:

medical and paramedical students

Objectives and indicators of success:

-Creating multiple workshops conducted by the newly prepared trainers
-Advocating for adding Anti-Microbial Resistance to the curricula of medical and paramedical colleges
-Using the pre and post questionnaires to publish a solid scientific paper to be used in advocating the high authorities
-Advocating for adding Anti-Microbial Resistance to the curricula of schools, medical and paramedical colleges
-Creating a national TOT
-Launching online campaign
-Launching multiple physical campaigns
-scientific questionnaires filled by the public before the awareness to determine how much do the people in Egypt know.

Methodology:

1. National TOT:
– It will take Two days in a venue in Cairo (to be known), 30-40 members of IFMSA-Egypt will participate in the TOT. It will take place in 28th and 29th of December, 2017.
– The TOT aims to develop scientific knowledge and skills of the participant to be able to conduct local workshops at their Local Committees later on.
2. Local Workshops:
– Local workshops will take place just after the National TOT at all the participating Local Committees and it will be conducted by the newly prepared trainers from the TOT.
-The local workshop aims to multiply our manpower massively as the expected manpower of the project is estimated to be at least 600 project team members allover Egypt.
3. Online Campaign:
– National Online Campaign: It will start in 24th of January, 2018 and last for four days to end in 27th of January, 2018.
– Local Online Campaigns: Local Committees are free to launch separate other online campaigns at different timing from the timeline but it will be obligatory to share in the national online campaign at the timing mentioned before.
-The online campaigns are through different means of social media as Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, Youtube, etc.
4. Local Physical Campaigns:
-Multiple Local Physical Campaigns allover Egypt governorates shall take place from 1st of Feb., 2018 till 1st of April, 2018.
5. National Celebration: It will take place at the first third of April, 2018. A Local Committee will host the celebration and there will be Activities’ Fair, huge physical campaigns and speakers.
6. Protocols with Externals:
-We will approach the ministries of Education and Higher Education to add brief notes about antimicrobial resistance in the curricula and to update the information about antibiotic resistance in the medical curricula.
7. Scientific Research:
– Using the scientific questionnaires filled during the process of the physical campaigns, we will start data analysis and use the statistics to publish a paper about Antimicrobial Resistance in Egypt and the public knowledge about it.
– Each LC will have a target of 200 pre-assessments and 200 post-assessment
questionnaires.
8. Media Support:
-We will approach some media partners to help us to spread our message faster and on wide scale.

Plans for evaluation:

1. Pre and post assessment questionnaires for the attendants of the National TOT, local workshops.
2. Pre and post questionnaires targeting the same place (a school for example) with a period in between to measure the effectiveness of the project.
3. Local Coordinators from all participating Local committees will have to send reports about the project’s status locally and the progress of the project.
4. Evaluation Form after Every Phase of the project will be available for Local Coordinators and participants.
