WONCA VII Iberoamerican Summit and II Andean Congress in Cali Colombia

From March 13th to 17th, IFMSA sent a delegation to the WONCA VII Iberoamerican
Summit and II Andean Congress in Cali, Colombia. To advocate for the IFMSA priorities
in fields related to the work of the family doctors in The Americas’ Region

After several months of preparations and work, the members from the Americas
the region made an excellent performance during the meeting on March 13th-14th. They
had the chance to present be present in de discussions of the 5 streams during the
Summit, where the Cali’s declaration was built, which are: 1) Education in peace
culture, 2) Economics and primary health care system, 3) Quaternary prevention, 4)
Migrants and health and 5) Mental health.

After the Summit, the II Andean congress took place, from March 15th to 17th, with the
following theme: “Role of medicine against violence and building peace culture”.
During the meeting, the delegation had the chance to present a poster called “The role of medical students to reach Universal Health Coverage”

The IFMSA delegation also had the opportunity to contact different authorities from
PAHO, including Dr. Luis Fabrega and WONCA, including Dr. Amanda Howe (WONCA
President) and Dr. Inez Padula (CIMF President). On the other hand, they also
connected with different national health ministries and presidents from national family
doctor’s organizations, which will help to expand our work at the national level for our
National Member Organizations.

The contacts the delegation had done will serve to connect the region with the representatives from WONCA and build together initiatives of advocacy and capacity building. At the same time, the collaboration will strengthen the bonds at the national level aiming the same objectives as at the regional level but establishing more specific ways of collaboration in the priorities of the countries.
